Passenger seats, benches and swivels

Freedman seats, bench-to-bed seats and cab swivels, anchored the way the seat maker tested them.

A seat is only as good as its anchorage

A passenger seat in a moving van has to hold a person in a crash, so how it's anchored matters as much as the seat. In the US, FMVSS 207 covers seats and their attachment, 209 the belts and 210 the belt anchorages. A seat's crash test only covers that seat on the mount it was tested with, so we mount to factory points or engineered plates per the maker's instructions, and we'll show you what the seat was tested to.

We mainly install Freedman seats and factory seats. We also install dual-fold bench-to-bed seats, reconfigure existing seating, and add swivel bases to cab seats. We install Scopema swivels, the most common choice for Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster cabs.

How we do it

  1. Pick the seat

A seat with documented testing for your use and layout.

  2. Anchor

Factory anchor points or engineered floor plates with backing.

  3. Belts and torque

Belts and fasteners installed to the seat maker's specs.

  4. Fit check

Clearance around the bed, galley and walkway.

  5. Demo

Fold, swivel and latch mechanisms tested with you.

What to know before you buy

Crash testing has limits

A seat's test covers that seat on that mount. L-track and floor bolts alone are not the same thing.

Check for recalls

Some van seats have had recalls. Check yours by VIN on NHTSA's site.

Swivels lock forward

Swivel seats must be locked facing forward to drive, and they raise the seat slightly.

Plan the floor

Seats affect the bed, galley and walkway. Plan them with the layout.

Questions about passenger seats

Can I just bolt a seat to the floor?

Not safely. Anchorages need to carry crash loads, which usually means factory points or engineered plates with backing.

Are swivel seats safe?

Yes when installed to spec and locked forward while driving.

Can you add seats to my Sprinter crew van?

Yes. We've added and reconfigured seating in crew vans and custom builds.

Do you supply the seats?

We can. We mainly install Freedman and factory seats, or we can install seats you've bought.
